a5c7b9f00b During a commemoration for Japanese soldiers fighting in the US Army during World War II, Mr. Miyagi meets the widow of his commanding officer. He gets to know her granddaughter Julie, an angry teenager who is still feeling the pain of losing both her parents in an accident and is having problems with her grandmother and her fellow pupils. Mr. Miyagi decides to teach her karate to get her through her pain and issues and back on the right path. In honour of the Japanese-American veteran troopers who bravely fought during WWII, the sage Karate master, Mr Miyagi, travels to Boston to attend a ceremony. There, in this unlikely place, Miyagi is introduced to the 17-year-old troubled teenage girl, Julie, who is constantly angry at the world and her abusive schoolmates, still unable to come to terms with the untimely loss of her parents. But before long, Julie will become Miyagi's new pupil, hopeful of teaching the rebellious youngster the true meaning of karate and self-esteem, through the knowledge of self-defense and respect for all living things. Could Julie be the next Karate Kid? This movie is pretty formulaic stuff, tolerable in the same vein as the other "Karate Kid" movies but I think there's one aspect that needs to be addressed. The bullies in the movie don't act towards Julie as if she were a girl. None of the bullies seem to see her as a girl, no one asks her out or even tries to make inappropriate overtures to her. You get the same "I'm gonna kick her *ss!" scenes as we did with Ralph Macchio but they just don't make sense here.

It's interesting to see early work by Hilary Swank and the movie isn't terrible but I always think that if a movie creates its own universe, there are certain rules within that universe that should be obeyed. Saying "it's just a movie" is too easy an excuse for laziness. The IMDb voters have been unusually cruel to this film. While it isn't by any means great, I like it and find the 95 minutes or so to be very enjoyable. We now know that then 19-year-old Hilary Swank later won an Oscar for her performance in BOYS DON'T CRY, and here she was already a beautiful young woman and a credible actress. As usual, Pat Morita is perfect as the gentle, stoic martial arts expert who always prefers avoiding a fight, but says, "If you must fight, then win. (wink and smile)."

some SPOILERS follow, read at your considered discretion…

Young Julie lost both parents in an accident and is mad at the world, her only connection seems to be an injured hawk that she cares for on the roof of the school building. Mr Miyagi was her grandfather's pal in the war, and offers to help young Julie cope with life and school. She gets expelled for two weeks on bogus grounds, but she and Miyagi use the time to visit monks and there she perfects her Karate skills.

Back at school, she gets a prom date, Miyagi buys her a pretty dress, teaches her how to waltz, but the mean kids hassle them, leads to a showdown on the piers, they burn his car, Miyagi and Julie show up, she kicks the bad kid's butt, Miyagi subdues the teacher, martial arts instructor, and everyone lives happily thereafter.

OK, it is greatly contrived. You can't become that good in two weeks at a monastery. Julie just too easily falls under the guidance of Mr Miyagi. The tough kids at school are too much of a cliche'. But the overall message is good, the need to find yourself, to look for the good in yourself and others, to respect all life, even the cockroach. Most of us like a story where the bad guys get put in their places. And the pretty but sad young girl becomes happy. Swank and Morita are a joy to watch, and I will watch it again.

The DVD picture and sound are fine, nothing special. No meaningful extras. The Next Karate Kid is harmless as children's entertainment, but for 104 very long minutes, there isn't a recognizable human being in sight. While in Boston to accept a special unit citation for the Japanese-American soldiers who fought in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team during World War II, Mr Miyagi (Pat Morita) stays at the house of the wife of an old war buddy where he meets her granddaughter, 16-year-old Julie Pierce (Hilary Swank) who is angry at the world following the death of her parents in a car accident. He winds up staying at the Pierce house to take care of Julie while her grandmother vacations at Miyagi's house in California. After a rough start, Miyagi and Julie find they have something in common …karate. The Next Karate Kid is the fourth movie in the Karate Kid series, preceded by The Karate Kid (1984) (1984), The Karate Kid Part II (1986) (1986), and(1989), all of which were based on scripts by screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen. Mark Lee wrote the script for The Next Karate Kid based on the characters created by Kamen. The Karate Kid movies have no relation to the DC Comics superhero also known as "Karate Kid". No. Daniel (Ralph Macchio) has presumably gone away to college. Mr Miyagi does mention him, however, when he tells Julie, after walking in on her while she's changing clothes, that he "used to live with boy…Daniel-san." Thereafter, he only alludes to Daniel when he comments, "Boy easier [than girl]." Macchio was 33 years old at the time The Next Karate Kid was filming. He has stated publicly that he was "not interested in becoming the Sylvester Stallone of Karate Kid movies." No particular time frame is given. Daniel is out of the picture, and Miyagi's only reference to him is in the past. In real time, the span between Karate Kid III (1989) and the Next Karate Kid (1994) is five years, a span that sounds reasonable. That phrase is uttered by Julie when she doubts that Miyagi can teach her anything. Morita was actually an American citizen, born in California of Japanese parents. To play the role of Mr Miyagi, he had to adopt a Japanese accent, since he spoke perfect English. Most likely not. Hawks of all kinds are protected by the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which makes it unlawful for anyone to pursue, hunt, take, capture, kill or sell birds on the protected list. Anyone possessing a bird on the list, whether live or dead, must turn it over to someone who has a federal permit to handle such birds. After Ned (Michael Cavalieri) and his friends make their daring bungee jump from the gym rafters over the dance floor, Julie and Eric (Chris Conrad) decide to leave the prom, unaware that Ned is following. They park in front of Julie's house, and Ned bends forward to kiss her. Suddenly, Ned begins smashing in the car windows with a baseball bat. He challenges Eric to met him at the docks and then drives away. Eric follows. When Eric gets to the docks, he finds himself surrounded by Ned's friends. Colonel Dugan (Michael Ironside) taunts him about not paying attention to the bullring challenge, but Eric replies, "I got a piece of you, didn't I?" Dugan gives the order to blow up Eric's car. A fight ensues, and Eric ends up on the ground. "Finish him," Dugan orders, but the boys are reluctant to further beat on Eric now that he's down. Suddenly, Julie and Miyaga drive up. In order to prove herself respectable, Julie uses her karate against Ned, who tries to fight dirty by tossing dirt in her face, but Julie focuses and ends up putting Ned on the ground. Dugan continues to goad the boys into fighting, but they back away. Miyagi finally stands against Dugan, easily overpowering him. Disgusted at the man they once thought had all the answers, the boys turn their backs on Dugan. When Julie compliments Miyagi on "kicking some butt," Miyagi simply replies, "Fighting not good, but if must fight…win." In the final scene, Angel the hawk is shown flying free.
